Shopping for Yourself While Christmas Shopping

Posted by Ashley in Nov 08, 2010, under Gift Ideas

Everyone knows that Christmas is all about giving but most of us are also tempted to shop for ourselves when we are out Christmas shopping for our beloved friends and family members. While some people may be tempted to pass up on purchases for themselves during the holiday season because they feel guilty making these purchases, there are others who feel there is absolutely nothing wrong with taking advantage of the huge sales which take place during the Christmas season to purchase a few items for themselves. Still others argue that Christmas time is the best time to shop for yourself in terms of finances because you are shopping at a time when most items are on sale. This article will take a look at the concept of shopping for yourself while Christmas shopping and will offer some advice for doing this without distracting from your regular Christmas shopping.

If you do opt to shop for yourself while you are Christmas shopping it is important to remember to keep your budget in mind while you do your shopping. If you do plan on shopping for yourself during the Christmas shopping it is important to budget for these expenditures. Whether you opt to include yourself in the Christmas shopping budget or create a separate budget for your personal shopping, you should make some plan for how you will deal with these additional financial concerns. One way to do this is to include yourself on your Christmas shopping list and set aside some money for your personal purchases when you are working on your Christmas budget. Another way to deal with the financial concerns is to plan on paying for gifts for everyone else on your Christmas list in cash and to make your purchases for yourself on a credit card. This is helpful because it does not reduce the amount of money you would otherwise spend on your friends and family members.

Another problem which often arises when you opt to shop for yourself when you are doing your regular Christmas shopping is that you may become distracted and not complete your Christmas shopping on time. Consider purchasing a Diamond Pendant for your sister. You may look through the collection and quickly choose one in a color, style and size you think will be appropriate for your sister. You might spend some time looking at the different colors and styles and trying to decide which size will fit best but in general it doesn’t take more than a few minutes to select a pendant and make your purchase. Now consider purchasing a Diamond Ring for yourself during the Christmas season. You may select several different styles you like in one or two sizes and a few different colors. You will try on each one to determine which style, color and size you like best. You might even try the ring on with a few different styles of dress which you think will match well. It is easy to see from this comparison how a shopper can easily spend a half hour to an hour buying a diamond jewellery for themselves and less than ten minutes purchasing the same  for someone else. It is also easy to see from this example how shopping for yourself while doing your Christmas shopping can prevent you from completing your shopping in a timely manner. For this reason it is wise to leave your personal shopping until after you have completed all of your Christmas shopping.

Whether you are searching for that unique jewellery to give to your favourite friend or simply looking for some Christmas Gift Ideas, we are sure we have got something for you at our Christmas Gift Shop at Diamonds UK. With our wide range of Diamond Jewellery online and all at remarkably low prices, we can guarantee that you or whoever you are buying for will not be left wanting!

Kanye West Brings on the Diamonds Sparkle in his Smile

Posted by Ashley in Oct 22, 2010, under Celebrity Gossip

They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend but Kanye West has proved that they can be a rapper’s best friend too.

We’ve seen people with gold teeth, silver teeth, tricked out grillz and beyond. Now, Kanye West seems to have topped them all by having diamond-encrusted choppers.

Kanye West told Vanity Fair that he’s had his bottom teeth permanently drilled and encrusted with diamonds.

“I just like diamond teeth and I didn’t feel like having to take them out all the time,” West Said.

When Ellen asked if he just put diamonds on top of his teeth, he responded, “No. It’s, like, replaced my bottom row of teeth.”

“I just thought that diamonds were cooler,” he told the presenter. “I guess there’s just certain things that rockstars are supposed to do.”

The news is less disturbing knowing that West severely damaged his bottom teeth in a car crash in 2002, but one dentist, Dr. Timothy Chase, told “Since diamonds are harder than your teeth, you will wind up breaking or wearing down your other teeth, causing you to need more dental work.”

A row of sparkling, bling-encrusted teeth like those Kanye West is sporting could cost upwards of $60,000, depending upon the quality of the stones

Is it just a rock star thing, or did Kanye go too far yet again?

Initial Pendant – Your Identity To The World

Posted by Ashley in Oct 18, 2010, under Initial Pendants

Initials make a great jewellery accessory for absolutely anyone. Many people prefer to wear initial jewellery as it is a more attention grabber as well as a great fashion accessory. The most important aspect of your personality is your name. Your “name” offer you identity in the society. People like to wear such kind of jewellery which symbolizes their “Name”. Initial pendant means first letter of your name. Initial Pendant is dynamic attention grabbing jewellery – now an extension of who you are.

According to the definition; pendant mean any hanging object. All of us must be familiar with another term called as pendulum which is another hanging object. Pendant is an old French word. Different pendants are used for different purposes; some pendants have mythical significance. Each pendant reflects different picture of life. Some pendants also give the feeling of self protection. For instance, the initial pendants give the feeling of affirmation and individuality. Initial pendants are available in different varieties and settings including Yellow Gold setting, White Gold setting and Silver setting. These pendants are available with all initials from A to Z.

Initial pendants provides a good way of starting communication as a person wearing the initial pendant will attract the other person, having conversation with her, to guess her name. So these pendants are an excellent way of inviting others to start conversation. The initial diamond pendants are ideal to be given as a gift. This gift would be special in a way because it would have the initial of the name of the person to whom you are presenting the gift.

A white gold setting gives an overall sparkling image of the diamond initial pendant but on the other hand a diamond initial pendant with a yellow gold setting will make the diamonds in the pendant more prominent as compared to the diamonds that comes with a white gold setting. Some people often get confused between white and yellow gold and very few know the exact difference between them. These two are the most common two types of gold having composed of only 58.3% pure gold. The remaining part is composed from different metallic components. Why use different metals, not pure gold? The answer is that the pure gold is too soft and malleable which can’t be used for jewellery pieces so it has to be combined with some metallic elements to get it into a proper shape. Some people think that these two are different metals; they are not. In real, both of these just use different alloys. White gold is alloyed with copper, Nickel and zinc whereas the yellow gold is alloyed with copper, Silver and zinc. It must be noted that different alloys doesn’t affect the value of the gold. The choice between yellow and white gold solely depends on the personal taste of the buyer.

While choosing between different diamonds initial pendants like; diamond initial pendant with white gold setting or with yellow gold setting, people often get confused. As mentioned earlier, there is no difference in the value of white gold and yellow gold. The choice depends on the taste of the buyer. People often buy these diamond initial pendants either yellow gold or white gold.

These diamond initial pendants are easy to wear and are designed to provide adequate security. They are designed in a way that the clasp can be fastened at different location; making the necklace very much adjustable to wear. The advantage of such adjustable necklaces is that you can change its adjustment according to your comfort and your dressing. Some dressing looks good with a long necklace like shoulder less dressing and some demands short necklace. When you adjust them, it is obvious that part of the chain will hang at the back of the neck. But nowadays, some chains come with such beautiful design that they even look better at the back than they look at the front. Another important advantage of these adjustable necklaces with a diamond initial pendant is that you can buy it as a gift for anyone without calculating the length of the chain as short and long length chains looks equally beautiful and elegant with different outfits.

When measuring the length of the necklace with a diamond initial pendant, you must also consider that the diamond initial pendant also adds approximately 3/4 of an inch to the overall length of the necklace. If you go to the store to buy it then there should be no problem in determining its length as you’ll be physically there to see it but if you shopping it through online then you should carefully read the length of the clasp to determine the overall length of the necklace.

There are few considerations that you must keep in your mind while purchasing a diamond initial pendant. First of all, you must always consider the length of the pendant you are going to buy. You should consider buying a perfect length so that the wearer can display the initial gets the best advantage of display. One tip is to use the length of different necklaces that you already posses. Your own necklace can give you a guide in selecting a new diamond initial pendant. Not to mention the fact that you should know the name of the person to whom you are buying a diamond initial pendant. Also it would be much better if you know the general liking of the person, in terms of the setting of the pendant, to whom you are buying it. If the person likes a yellow gold instead of a white gold then you should think of buying a diamond initial pendant with a yellow gold setting. Different settings for the pendant look different with varying outfits. For instance, a complete shoulder off black outfit would look stunning with a diamond initial pendant having a white gold setting. Each setting has its own beauty.

One popular item in the Simply Gold Initial Collection is the cubic zirconium pendants. The cubic zirconium initial pendant is a white and yellow gold block initial set with round cut clear cubic zirconium stones. This piece is definitely stylish and would look great with any outfit and suitable for any occasion. Another choice would be the script initial pendant which has more of a scroll look to it, making it more fancy and stylish.

Whatever someone’s personal taste is they will surely find a design or style in Diamonds UK Initial Collection that will satisfy them. With the variety of looks, styles and designs to choose from they offer something for everyone!

December Birthstone – Imperial Tanzanite

Posted by Ashley in Oct 18, 2010, under Birthstones

Tanzanite are those eyes of yours,
Love-lit with sweetest splendor.
Thrice blessed is that lucky one,
On whom they shine in December..”

In 2002 the American Gem Trade Association selected tanzanite as the birthstone for December. It is the suggested gemstone for the 8th and 24th wedding anniversary. It is one of the newest gemstones and has rapidly become very popular especially in earrings, pendants, rings and bracelets.

The December birthstone of the Tanzanite is considered to be the birthstone Sagittarius (23 Nov – 22 Dec) & Capricorn (23 Dec – 19 Jan).

The main reason for this modern gemstone to become a birthstone for the December is its versatile nature. Tanzanite radiates spectrum of colors between azure and amethyst. This signifies the cooling effect and the warmth imbibed within it. The richness of the color corresponds to the glowering wintery sky. Tanzanite has made an impression on the jewellery and gemstone trade with its vivid violet-blue color, clarity, and rarity.

Discovered in 1967, the name ‘Tanzanite’ is derived from the name Tanzania. The gemstone is found beneath the sweeping grasslands in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania , which is a country in east Africa. Tanzanite gemstones are not found anywhere else on earth. Due to the fact that tanzanite is only found in one place in the world and is formed as the result of a rare geolocial phenomenon, most estimates are that there is enough Tanzanite in the ground to last for another 15 to 20 years.

Wearing the birthstone associated with your date of birth is thought to bring good luck and protection. Tanzanite is said to be of benefit to workaholics, and to those who are overworked, as it is thought to calm an overactive mind, to relax you and to slow you down. This brings you back into balance, so that you can lead a less stressful, more organised, healthier and more productive life. Tanzanite is good stone to use during crystal meditation as its high vibrational energy can facilitate a deep meditative state. It is also said to enhance psychic abilities and to open the heart, elevating the mood and bringing feelings of peace. In addition Tanzanite’s blue colour activates the Throat Chakra encouraging clear communication.

Due to Tanzanite’s relative softness, it should be treated with care. It is not a gem that should break easily but due to its relatively low score on the Mohs’ Scale it can scratch more easily than other gems like Ruby. To clean it do not use an ultrasonic cleaner or steam cleaner often found in jewellers. The best method is simply to use a toothbrush and warm, soapy water.

December Birthstone – Alluring Turquoise

Posted by Ashley in Oct 18, 2010, under Birthstones

“If cold December gave you birth
The month of snow and ice and mirth
Place on your hand a turquoise blue;
Success will bless whate’er you do. .”

Turquoise is the birthstone for December and the traditional gift to commemorate the 5th and 11th years of marriage. .

The December birthstone of the Turquoise is considered to be the birthstone for Sagittarius (The sign of the Archer) and relate to those born between December 22 – January 19. The Zodiac sign of Sagittarius also responds to Topaz , Beryl, Blue Topaz, Blue Zircon, Ruby, to Lapis Lazuli and Citrine.

It is generally accepted that turquoise gets its name from “pierre turquoise” a French phrase meaning “Turkish stone.” Others believe that the name comes from the Persian word “fiouze,” meaning the color turquoise. .

Turquoise can be found anywhere in the world, but high-grade turquoise is mostly found in Persia, China, Tibet and the Southwest. The early mines in Egypt, Sinai, were already worked out in 2000 B.C. The stone was also used to make artifacts, ornaments and to decorate palaces and temples. Turquoise was first sent from Turkey to Europe, hence its name, which means “Turkish” in French. .

Turquoise promotes mental and spiritual clarity and expansion and enhances wisdom, trust , kindness and understanding. In ancient Persian, the sky-blue gemstones were originally worn around the neck or on the hand as protection to ward off unnatural death. Today the beautiful stone is considered a good luck “charm” for aviators, flight staff and other professionals who need to ward off accidents. .

Whether purchased or inherited, turquoise jewelry is both an investment and a heirloom. To safeguard them both, it is important to provide proper care and storage. Without proper care, turquoise can become discolored and potentially damaged. To prevent that from happening, Store turquoise separately from harder gemstones, as they can scratch turquoise. Do not use commercial jewelry cleaners or ultrasonic cleaners to clean turquoise jewelry. These can damage and discolor the stone. Turquoise jewelry can be wiped with a soft, wet cloth and then dried. .

November Birthstone – Charismatic Citrine

Posted by Ashley in Oct 18, 2010, under Birthstones

“It is the month of November,
I love best
Negative feeling, fear and anxiety,
With Citrine put to rest..”

Citrine is considered as an alternative to topaz as the birthstone for November and the accepted gem for the 13th and 17th wedding anniversaries.

The November birthstone of the Citrine is considered to be the birthstone for Scorpion and relate to those born between October 24 and November 21.

Citrine is the yellow variety of macrocrystalline quartz that takes its name from citron, the French word for lemon. Citrine is a variety of quartz ranging in colors of yellow, yellow-brown, orange, dark orange-brown, reddish-brown. Citrine crystals can form together with amethyst or smoky quartz to form ametrine a bi-colored quartz.

Most citrine comes from Brazil, but almost all of the Brazilian material is heat-treated amethyst. Natural citrine can also be found in the Ural Mountains of Russia, in Dauphine, France, and in Madagascar. The inexpensive low grade amethyst is heated at high temperatures to produce the popular orange, reddish and sherry colored citrine. Darker colors are considered more valuable, including the medium golden orange and dark sherry-colors.

Citrine symbolizes light-heartiness, joy and happiness. It is the signature of wisdom and peace and acts as a protective talisman. In ancient times, this gem was carried as a protection against snake venom and evil thoughts. If worn at night this gem helps prevent nightmares. This stone has immense healing powers and has the power to boost self-confidence, self esteem, creativity, motivation and inner calm. It also stimulates memory and brings in a feel of security and release the wearer from negative feelings, fears and anxieties. Citrine gem is used for the maintenance and treatment of the Heart, kidneys, liver, muscles, red & white corpuscles, digestive tract etc. Citrine is valuable in the treatment of depression and eliminates self-destructive tendencies. This stone also aids digestion and removes toxins from the body. It also helps in fighting diabetes.

Citrine could last forever if proper care is taken in a right way. It should be protected from possible scratch situations. It is very important that the citrine is not left in the sun or any such situations, like sunbathing where it is exposed to prolonged sunlight. As it is a heat sensitive stone, it will change its color or fades into lighter color. The stone can be used in any commercial jewelry and can be cleaned by plain soap and warm water with soft brush. Make sure that it is rinsed properly and dry after through cleaning. The stone can be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner, but steam cleaning is not recommended for it.

The name “Topaz” (Topaze French, Topas German, Topacio Spanish) is derived from the Greek “Topazos” or “to seek” (the name of an island in the Red Sea). .

Topaz is found in India, Brazil, Mexico, United States, Burma (now Myanmar), Madagascar, Russia, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Nigeria. .

Although topaz is one of the most gorgeous stones, it has never had the same popularity as many other semi precious stones in recent years. It ranges in colour from white to shades of brown, pink and blue – the most valuable colour being a beautiful peachy brown. It has a wonderful lustre, depth of colour, sparkle and a sheen that almost looks oily. Such is the sparkle shown in a faceted topaz that the white stones in the past were often used as diamond substitutes. .

Topaz was once linked with sanity, healing, and life, as well as being connected to strength by the ancient Greeks. This stone has even been linked to an ability to make the wearer invisible in dangerous situations. A stunning gem, topaz boasts both beauty and strength. .

As with many gems it had innumerable medicinal benefits attributed to it, from being able to help asthma and insomnia if made into a powder – to being able to cure ‘dimness of vision’. .

Topaz nearly as hard as diamond, so it can withstand a great deal of wear. Topaz can be cleaned with warm, soapy water or jewelry cleaning solutions. Do not use ultrasonic cleaning. .

October Birthstone – Incandescent Opal

Posted by Ashley in Oct 18, 2010, under Birthstones

“October’s child is born for woe,
And life’s vicissitudes must know,
But lay an opal on her breast,
And hope will lull those woes to rest. .”

opal is the birthstone for October and the gemstone given to commemorate a 14th wedding anniversary. .

The October birthstone of the Opal is considered to be the birthstone for Libra (The sign of the Scales) and relate to those born between October 24 and November 22. The Zodiac sign of Libra also responds to peridot, Agate, Aquamarine, Tourmaline and Sapphire. .

The name “opal” (opale French, opalo Spanish or Italian) is derived from the Sanskrit word “upala” the Greek word “opallios,” and the Latin word “opalus;” all meaning “precious stone.” .

The oldest evidence of opals used as ornamentation dates back to nearly 4,000 B.C. – over 6,000 years ago. Those opals were found by Sir Edmund Leakey in a cave in Kenya. The opals known to the Romans were probably mined in Hungary – but the most brilliant and highly prized opals today come from Australia. Opals were first discovered in Australia in the late 1800s, and their fire and beauty quickly made Australian opals the standard by which other opals are judged. .

According to legend, the wearer of an opal will be urbane and courteous and protected from the wrath of others. The stone was also reputed to make its owner invisible to foes and thereby exempt from misfortune. Opals were supposed to drive away despondency and evil thoughts, cure kidney diseases and cholera, soothe the eyes and nerves and protect against lightning. It was believed to make wishes come true and was particularly favorable to children, the theater, amusements, friendships and emotions. it is the gem of inspiration in the arts and in love. .

Opal is rated about 6.5 on this scale indicating that it is not one of the hardest gem stones. Therefore it is wise to remove your opal jewellery(especially rings) when doing chores in which you may knock or scratch your opal. When cleaning solid opals, never use any chemicals or industrial cleaners. Simply use a mild detergent and with some warm water give the opal a wipe with a soft cloth. The same applies to doublet and triplet opals but limit the use of water by just dampening the cloth. .

September Birthstone – Splendid Sapphire

Posted by Ashley in Oct 18, 2010, under Birthstones

“A maiden born when autumn leaves
Are rustling in September’s breeze,
A sapphire on her brow should bind;
To bring her joy and peace of mind. .”

Sapphire is the birthstone for September and the gemstone given for anniversaries of the 5th and 45th years of marriage. .

The September birthstone of the Sapphire is considered to be the birthstone for Virgo (The sign of the Virgin) and relate to those born between August 23 – September 22. The Zodiac sign of Virgo also responds to Carnelian, Zircon, Sardonyx, peridot and Agate.

The name “Sapphire” (Saphir French or German, Zafir Spanish, Zaffiro Italian) is originally derived from Greek (sappheiros), the Sanskrit word sanipruja (“dear to Saturn”), and the Hebrew word sappir, meaning gem. .

The historical source of sapphire is Sri Lanka. In ancient times, people used to dig the ground hunting for Sapphires and even today Sri Lanka remains to be a popular source of fine sapphires. The particular pinkish orange sapphire, padparadscha, is found only in Sri Lanka. Another major source fine sapphire is Australia. The Australian gemstones are deep velvety blue and dark inky in appearance. The most beautiful and the most valuable blue sapphires were found in Kashmir in India. In 1880, there was a land slide which uncovered this treasure. The Kashmir sapphire has a pure, intense blue color with a very subtle violet undertone, refined by a fine, velvety shine. According to some specialists, the rich color of this sapphire does not change its hue in artificial light. But due to the tough terrain of the region, this source is not being explored further. The Burmese sapphire has a color close to the Kashmir sapphire, beautiful deep blue. Other sources of sapphire include countries like Madagascar, Burma, America, Thailand and Cambodia. .

Sapphire is said to preserve the wearer from envy and to attract divine favor which gave them the power to influence spirits. It is believed that “fraud was banished from its presence” and the stone enabled the ancient sages to hear and understand the most obscure of oracles. As the centuries went by quite detailed descriptions were given of how sapphires could cure illness. They could be ground into paste to cure ulcers and stomach cramps or rubbed on wounds to aid healing. The Hindus thought the blue sapphires conferred happiness, wealth and the favour of Princes. The Buddhists had less materialistic views, believing that sapphires encouraged prayer, gave peace of mind, tranquillity and spiritual enlightenment. .

Sapphires are among the hardest gemstones used for jewelry, but they are still subject to splitting and chipping. It’s important to take care when handling and wearing sapphires to avoid damaging the stone with a hard knock. Sapphires should be cleaned regularly to keep their fire bright, since the quality of the sparkle is determined by the refraction of light through the transparent gem’s facets. Sapphires can be cleaned at home with a soft cloth and warm water with dish detergent. .
